3 Ways to Reprogram Your Subconscious Mind

reprogram your subconsious mindReprogramming your subconscious mind isn’t as difficult as it might seem at first.

You don’t have to be a master at psychology or have a Ph. D in neurobiology.  You just need a desire to change the way you think and believe.  But why would you want to do that?

Well, if you weren’t raised in a supportive environment you might be carrying some emotional or psychological baggage you don’t need.  This could be anything from having a scarcity mentality toward money to more severe relationship issues.

Your first step is to identify what you’d like to change about your life.  This might be monetary, emotional, or something else entirely.

Then it’s time to spring into action.  Here are 3 ways you can reprogram your subconscious mind.

1.  Affirmations

While affirmations are the simplest way to reprogram your subconscious mind, they are also the least fun.

An affirmation is simply a statement, worded in the present, of a future state you want to come to pass.  For example, let’s say you want to earn $10,000 a month.  Your affirmation might be “I earn $10,000 a month.”  Pretty simple, eh?

There are some rules here, however.  First of all, if you’re sitting on your butt watching TV all day while affirming “I earn $10,000 a month,” you’re delusional.  Unless you’re actively doing all you can to make your affirmation true in the physical sense, your subconscious will not respond.

To Reprogram Your Subconscious Mind, You’ve Got To Take Action

I’ve also read books that advise using multiple affirmations at the same time.  For example, saying 20 different affirmations per day.  I can only speak from my own experience, and from what I’ve seen, this doesn’t work.  For me, it dilutes the process.  I focus on one affirmation at a time.

Get Massive

Some books tell you to say your affirmation 10 times a day for 30 days and you’ll start seeing results.  Again, I’m only speaking from experience, but 10 times a day won’t change a thing.  Massive results require massive action.  How many would be effective?

In my experience, no less than 500 repetitions of an affirmation per day will bring you the results you want.  Keep in mind, I say “no less.”  If you really want to see massive results, I’d suggest saying it 1,000 or more times a day.

You might be thinking, “Man, that’s a lot!”  And you’re right.  But the results are almost guaranteed.

If you can say your affirmation 20 times a minute, in one hour you would have said it 1200 times.  If you can set aside an hour a day for this, that would be ideal, but it’s not necessary.  You can say your affirmation during down time, like being stuck in traffic, waiting in line at the bank or grocery store, etc.

2.  Visualization

Visualization is one of the most fun ways to reprogram your subconscious mind.  I say this, because it’s almost like daydreaming.

Lots of people tell me, “I can’t visualize.”  I say they just have a distorted definition of what visualization is.  Let me ask you a question:  Is the doorknob on your front door on the right or left?  To answer that question, you had to visualize.  That’s all it is.

Visualization works best, however, when you can incorporate all your senses.  With just a tiny amount of practice, anybody can do this.

Imagine you’re walking on the beach.  Feel the sand under your feet.  Is it hot, or still cool?  Is it loose, or tightly packed?  the beachHear the waves crashing on the beach, and the gulls singing above.  See the blue sky.  Imagine a glass of lemonade in your hand.  Bring it to your lips and notice how it tastes.  Really taste it.

Now do the same thing with your goal.  If your goal is to have a new gray Jaguar with pink leather interior, imagine running your hand on the outside of it.  Notice its smoothness and temperature.  Climb inside and take it for a drive.  How does the interior smell?  How does the engine sound?

Why is sensory integration so important?  Because what we’re doing is convincing the subconscious mind that this is real.  By doing so, it will bring about events to make this so in our physical world.  Here’s why this is so.

The Subconscious Mind Maintains The Status Quo

Our subconscious mind’s primary objective is survival.  It doesn’t care if we’re happy or miserable, just that we survive another day.  To do this, it looks back on the past to see what is safe for us.  If we’ve lived through a certain experience, then it’s survivable.  It might not be pleasant, but we can survive it.

If we try to introduce something new to the subconscious mind, we may find resistance.  This is because it’s not yet been established that this experience is a safe one.  The status quo might be ugly, but it’s doable.

The really cool thing about the subconscious mind is that it doesn’t know the difference between what is real and what is imagined.  Have you ever had a dream, and you wonder later on whether or not this really was a dream?  This is especially so if we incorporate all our senses into what we’re imagining.

If we imagine ourselves vividly driving our new Jaguar, and program the subconscious mind into believing that this experience is real, then this becomes one of the experiences we can survive.  Why?  Because we’ve survived it before.  At least, that’s what the subconscious believes.

3.  Observation

Observation is not as fast as either visualization or affirmation, but it’s just as effective.  You simply observe your beliefs.

Your beliefs surface most strongly during times of intense stressedpressure or stress.  If you can step outside yourself during these times and ask yourself, “What do I really believe about what is going on right now,” your insight can help you to change that belief.

For example, let’s say you’re on the freeway when somebody cuts you off.  Your initial reaction is to flip the guy off, pound on your steering wheel, and yell some pretty nasty, colorful metaphors.

Instead of doing this, observe.  You might find that you believe most drivers are rude, discourteous, and dangerous.  This belief colors your entire mood when you’re behind the wheel.  You may notice every tiny infraction freeway drivers make, which makes your driving experience an angry one.

How do you counter this?  Well, this is similar to using an affirmation, but not exactly.  First, look at your belief, “Most drivers are rude, discourteous, and dangerous.”  Is that belief really serving you?  Of course not.

Then, to reprogram your subconscious mind, you want to formulate the opposite of that belief.  Say something like, “Most drivers are kind, courteous, and safe.”

At first, saying this will make you feel uncomfortable.  That’s okay.  Unlike affirmations, you don’t need to keep repeating this.  Your task now is to find evidence of its truth.

When driving, begin to look for every act of courtesy and kindness by other drivers.  If you really look, you’ll find plenty.  Make a conscious effort to ignore the bad drivers.  By focusing on the good, you’ll find your entire belief gradually changes.  This is indeed a powerful way to reprogram your subconscious mind.

Your turn.  I’d love to know what you think about reprogramming your subconscious mind.  Have you done any of these techniques?  Did they work for you?

Thanks for your kind words. I agree that reprogramming our subconscious mind cleans our system of toxins through negative thoughts and feelings. Thoughts and feelings come from our beliefs, and our beliefs are rooted deeply in our subconscious mind.

I love this subject Gregory… I did a lot of this almost 4 years ago now…

Getting rid of all those limiting beliefs that were instilled in me since childhood. It does take a lot of work and then you can’t just sit back and expect things to happen. You have to take action and do your best but keep the positive attitude that these things that you want have already happened. I know it’s hard and it took me a long time to figure this all out but I have a vision board hanging right above my desk that I look at every single day. I thank God every day for all the things he has already brought me because I know they are on their way. People may think it’s silly, but they won’t when these things start pouring into their lives.

Thanks for this topic and for the reminder. Enjoyed reading this post.

      Hi Adrienne,

I also have a vision board, but it’s on my computer. I look at it 3 times every day. I don’t believe showing thanks for things you’ve not yet physically received is silly at all. You are implanting the notion in your subconscious mind that this is the status quo. It will then go to work on bringing this reality to you.

  • Gregory, aloha. What a terrific job you did educating people on how to reprogram their minds. No doubt, if they follow your step-by-step method they too can be successful in replacing those thoughts that do not serve.

Like you, Gregory, I prefer to focus on 1 or 2 affirmations at a time. I discovered what was best for me by trial and assessment. What I found, is that if I had many affirmations, they became part of a laundry list and repeating them became a chore. If I want to change something in my life, I definitely do not want to see it as a chore.

In closing I wanted to share a technique I learned some time ago. this is the mirror technique where you look at yourself in the mirror and say your affirmations. For me, this is truly effective. To learn more, people can read “Magic of Believing” by Claude Bristol, 1948.

Thx so much, Gregory, for reminding us of the importance of focus and our affirmations. Aloha. Janet

      Hi Janet,

I’ve been there, where saying affirmations is a chore. Like you say, that’s not the way to make them effective. I’ve used the mirror technique, and it works great. The problem is finding the time. I usually integrate my affirmations into my day, during down time.

I’m also a hypnotherapist, so I’ll record some relaxation techniques and record my affirmation repeatedly. Then, at the end of the day, I’ll kick back into my recliner, put the headphones on, and go into a trance. This is very effective, I find.

Great to see you here, Janet. Thanks for commenting!

  • Hi Greg,

    Excellent tips here.

Recently I’ve focused on observing. My mental picture is clear and I’ve affirmed a great deal. Now, the really fun part: observing the feelings and beliefs preventing the picture from coming into form. An awareness expanding practice, to see the least ;)

      Hi Ryan,

Observing is extremely important. Simply by observing the feelings and beliefs, without owning them, causes them to change. This is actually one of the beautiful things about meditation. You’re observing your consciousness, and, in doing so, are changing it.

Great insight, Ryan. Thanks for being here!

This tactics are what that are making the millions are using to get ahead in life. The secret to success is to visualize what we want to have.

It makes so much sense, that by focusing on the positives in your life, you will naturally attract more positives in your life. I wish I’d thought of that! Anyway, I’m going to get started on mine immediately.

  • Hi Gregory,

thanks for picking up on our recent conversation. You explain clearly what the subconscious mind is: A powerful but dumb stronghold of the status quo that isn’t able to discriminate between fiction and reality.

We can learn two things from that:

    1. We can restructure or subconscious.

    2. It takes effort und patience to do that.

Means to do so are plentiful, you cover those we can use without the help of a therapist.

    Take care

I like the way you say, “We can restructure our subconscious.” That’s so true. Our current structure might not be to our liking, but we don’t have to live with it if we choose not to.

      Thanks for commenting, Oliver.

  • Very cool post, Gregory :)

I have to admit, I’m guilty sometimes of thinking that affirmations and things like that are some kind of New Age, hocusy-pocusy stuff. But if I’m honest with myself, I know how effective simple things – like consciously deciding to have a good day – can be. So maybe it’s just time for me to get off my high horse and actually try some of them before jumping to conclusions.

      Hi Sarah,

Great to see you here! I can certainly understand your skepticism. As a hypnotherapist, I can tell you there is a lot of garbage out there. It doesn’t matter how positive you are or how many affirmations you say, if you’re driving West looking for a sunrise, you’re delusional. If you’re sick, you don’t need to visualize, you need to see a doctor.

Thank you so much for commenting! Talk soon.

Great post, Gregory! I love affirmations, ever since I decided to give them a try I have been a believer! I have never tried saying them as many times as you suggest, I will have to give that a try! Wow! :) I’ve been so busy lately and when I recognized that I was overwhelmed I knew that I hadn’t done my affirmations in about a week!

Visualization is really powerful too. I love looking at the vision board that I have created for myself, it’s so inspiring! Long before I had ever heard of vision boards I created one for myself and I would look at it daily and all except one picture came to pass!
